On this day, 13th of January, 1901, paintings by Vlaho Bukovac Heavenly and Earthly Coronation were assembled on the ceiling of Bonda Theatre in Dubrovnik. 118 years ago, at 5 o’clock, a large number of people of Dubrovnik came to the theatre to admire the paintings of the brilliant author who laid the foundations of the Croatian modern painting.

The Dubrovnik theatre, located in the very heart of the city was constructed in 1865. At that time the theatre was named after the rich benefactor who invested his own money to finance the project Luko Bonda. Today it is named after Dubrovnik’s most famous author, playwright and poet Marin Držić. In fact a statue of Dubrovnik’s favourite bard stands outside of the theatre today.
