Organized by the European Commission every other year, the European Destinations of Excellence Award was among others, given out to ‘Vukovar – Vučedol – Ilok’, a representative from Croatia!
European Destinations of Excellence (EDEN) is a project that promotes models of sustainable tourism development through national competitions held every other year, with the aim of drawing attention to the values, diversity and common features of European tourist destinations, thus creating a platform for the exchange of examples of good practices across Europe.
The topic for the season 2016/2017 was ‘Cultural tourism’ with the focus on promoting the sustainable models of tourism. Eighteen European destinations were given the EDEN award. Besides the ‘Vukovar – Vučedol – Ilok’, there were 4 more contestants for the award from Croatia: ‘Đakovo city – the municipality of Gorjani’, ‘Rural Konavle’, ‘Smiljan – Gospić’ & ‘Zagorje – fairy tale on a palm’.
This Croatian destination has now officially joined the rich network of European destinations of excellence. Rujana Bušić Srpak, the director of Vukovarsko-srijemska Tourist Board received the award and signed the Brussels Declaration on the European Network of Destinations of Excellence for Sustainable Tourism where all EDEN’s destinations are committed to cooperation and exchange of knowledge, experiences, and examples of good practice.
