Location Scouting: Weekend in Zagreb February 19th/20th

FRIDAY, February 19th

TOMORROW IS SATURDAY
Lauba, baruba Filipovica street 23, 10 pm

#bosozoku is the name of the game for this iteration of one of the most popular monthly parties in Zagreb. Literal translation from Japanese is ‘gone out of control tribe’ and refers to a segment of their youth culture that heavily customizes vehicles. The party in Zagreb’s trendiest art gallery has little to do with custom cars, and a lot to do with sounding cool, and DJs Pill Jackson, Ela and Pips are there to make sure the sounds you hear are indeed cool.

PEPER CLUB OPENING NIGHT
Peper, Ilica 5, 10 pm

Pepermint was, up until last Saturday, one of the most popular clubs in downtown Zagreb. Many were surprised when the management almost abruptly announced that the club was closing. But the owners went by with the ‘out with the old, in with the new’ saying and quickly announced they’re opening a new club just a few steps away, where another popular club Maraschino used to be. Tomo Ricov, the owner of Pepermint, and now Peper, is known in Zagreb as the godfather of clubbing with a long line of successful and trendy clubs, bars and other venues, so everybody’s excited to see what he’ll bring to Zagreb’s newest club opening today. Peper is opening with the sounds of funk.

PHILIPPE@FunkClub
Funk Club, Tkalciceva street 52, 10 pm

Phillipe is best known for his contributions in popularizing drum ‘n’ bass in Croatia with his Confusion programs, but for the last couple of years has branched out to different genres of electronic music. His Funk gigs are intimate explorations of  deep house, nu disco, groovy house, bass line, future garage, acid and electro and a listening (and dancing) pleasure for all the fans of those genres.

EAGLES OF DEATH METAL
Tvornica Kulture, Subiceva streeet 2, 9 pm

EoDM have came back to Europe to play the concerts that were canceled after the Paris tragedy. Three days after coming back to play in the city where the tragedy occurred, EoDM are playing in Zagreb and we can only imagine the defiant energy they’re bringing with them. A must see.

THE BEAT FLEET
KSET, Unska street 3, 9 pm

KSET is celebrating 40 years of its existence this year, and are bringing in now famous bands that started their careers playing in the underground club. The Beat Fleet are huge in Croatia. With their authentic Split state of mind hip hop, humor, social critique and samples of Dalmatian evergreens are one of the most intelligent and fun hip hop bands out there and a must for anyone hoping to discover great local music.

SATURDAY, February 20th

IT’S NEVER TOO LATE FOR 2008
Vip CLub, ban Jelacic square, 11 pm

Ahh, 2008, a year to remember for its pop music….or not. Let’s be real, 2008 was not that memorable, but it was dance-able, and it’s good to have a nice ‘trash from the past’ party every once in a while. Usher, Akon, Pussycat Dolls, The Black Eyed Peas, Rihanna, Timbaland, Sean Kingston, T.A.T.U., Linkin Park, 50 Cent, Soulja Boy, Britney Spears…are having a come back, if not for one night, at Vip Club.

WILDCARD meet OBERKULL
Aquarius club, Aleja Matije Ljubeka, 11 pm

It’s good to see Aquarius back in its game. One of the more popular clubs in Zagreb has in recent years moved most of its programs to the party famous Zrce beach on Pag island, and had not started its regular season in Zagreb last autumn. That did not fare well with local clubbers.  The mistake, it seems, has been rectified with their new WildCard program that brings in young and popular DJs from all around.  Oberön and Akuul from Cosmic Vibes are this Saturday’s wildcards in the most broad sense as they’ve proven themselves over and over as a sure bet in club music.

WINTER MUSIC CONFERENCE feat. JAY LUMEN & MARKO RISTIC
Hypo Center, Slavonska avenue 6, 10 pm

Winter Music Conference is a party concept that presents a different genre of electronic music each month until June 2016, bringing in one internationally famous and one local DJ for back to back sets. This month they’re bringing in Jay Lumen, one of the biggest top charters of the new generation of tech house/techno producers.
